நான் "வறுமையின் நிறம் சிவப்பு" திரைப்படம் பார்த்த பின் பாரதியார் கவிதைகள் படிக்க மற்றும் ரசிக்க கற்று கொன்டேன். உலக நாயகன் கமல் ஹாசனின் உச்சரிப்பு திறன் மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைத்தது. மகாகவி பாரதியாரை விமர்சிக்க தகுதியற்றவன் நான். "யோக சித்தி" என்ற தலைப்பில் உள்ள ஒரு தோத்திர பாடலின் ஒரு பகுதி எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். அந்த வரிகளை இங்கு எழுதியுள்ளேன். இந்த பாடல் உங்களுக்கு உத்வேகம் அளிக்கவில்லை என்றால், வேறு எதுவும் தர இயலாது.

நின்னைச் சிலவரங்கள் கேட்பேன் – அவை
நேரே இன்றெனக்குத் தருவாய் – என்றன்
முன்னைத் தீயவினைப் பயன்கள் – இன்னும்
மூளா தழிந்திடுதல் வேண்டும் – இனி
என்னைப் புதியவுயி ராக்கி – எனக்
கேதுங் கவலையறச் செய்து – மதி
தன்னை மிகத்தெளிவு செய்து – என்றும்
சந்தோஷங் கொண்டிருக்கச் செய்வாய்
Meaning/Summary
Scavenging for their daily rice,And wagging chins on various insignificant fibs
Dejected in spirit, and toiling in vain suffering
Performing deeds that scathe fellow-men
Aging with grey hair (in due course)
Burdened with their own noxious bile
Like these risible people (who live in vain)
Did you think I would fall suit and be struck down?
I will ask you certain boons
You shall grant them to today
The sins of my past (misdeeds) should
Die without rebirth
You shall make me a new person, Make me feel no worries,
Make my mind clear and sharp
Make me feel bliss and content - forever.

In this poem Bharathi is taking Parashakthi to task for not recognizing the suffering of humanity at large. He wants a lofty life---not just the day to day struggle that most people follow. He would rather die doing great things than grow old doing little things (---actually he did meet with such a wish when he died!). He does not beg for boons---rather he demands them from the goddess. He thinks her children deserve to live a lofty life. He wants to convert base metals to gold, ordinary stones to diamond, convert grass to grains, make sand into sugar, and similar wonderful and miraculous deeds to uplift the standards of his fellowmen. He wants the country to prosper and its citizens to live a better life. Bharathi wants such great skills to help the people---a tall order indeed to the goddess to make him do such deeds. He wants the boon from the goddess to elevate the status of the country. All this was in the early 1900s when the country was under the pangs of British rule.
