The movie '96 is extremely close to my heart. I even wrote a post about it. It's one of the best movies I've watch in recent times. I've been listening to the album on loop ever since I saw the movie at Luxe Cinemas, Chennai. Chinmayi's mellifluous voice, Pradeep Kumar's sensational singing, Govind Vasantha's backgorund score and soundtrack, the lyrics written by Karthik Netha, Uma Devi and Vibin Ram make for an unforgettable musical experience. Ideally, I should write a post about every single song in this movie. But I'll start with this one. A song that blew my mind away. A song that beautifully captures the essence of solitude, loneliness and growing up. A song that brilliantly portrays the simple pleasures and reality of solo-travel.


P.S: The beautiful poetry of this song is definitely lost in my translation. I hope, at the very least, I got the meaning/essence across :)

Meaning/Summary

After reaching the shore,
I like the sea.
After a few grey hairs,
I understand the world.

All the pleasures of yesterday,
give meaning to the present.
All the pleasures of the present-day,
will show a meaning tomorrow.

To live my life.
I rise up without sinking.
To kindle the eternal inner source.
I'm recovering here, today.
I'm plunging here, today.

I look at myself as if I'm a stranger.
Naturally without anything.
Clearly, like a flame.

I live in a depth where 'I' doesn't exist.
Born as a mirror.
I become everything I see.

Life is enough as a cat rubbing against the legs.

A beautiful feeling to interact with everything I encounter.

I'll be myself
I'll live to the fullest during the day.
I refuse to live a drab, monotonous life.

  1. The word வாகு has multiple meanings. I believe the meaning used here is "the base of a right-angled triangle". Upright as an alternate word/metaphor.
  2. The work பாகு has multiple meanings as well. One of them is molasses/treacle. I believe the context here is sweetness. A literal translation to english doesn't make sense.
  3. வல்லூறு is a bird of prey, a hawk or a falcon. இராசாளி is another Tamil synonym.
